WHAT'S DIFFERENT HERE?

The EY PUBLIC VALUE AWARD FOR START-UPs 2018 is not just about having a solid business plan for your startup or a cutting-edge product. It is also not solely dependent on if (or when) your start-up makes a profit and/or how measurable it is.

The focus of this award is the social benefit, and thus the public welfare contribution that arises from your business model, your product, or your service. This can happen in very different ways. No matter what industry you belong to, no matter what your purpose. Public value is not just created in Social Entrepreneurship, but also in companies that are profit and competition oriented.

Participation in the award is also interesting for you and your start-up. After all, your contribution to society through your products or services essentially determines how your start-up is perceived and recognized by the public. Through this change of perspective, you may discover values in your start-up that you were not aware of before, but that should also be emphasized.

Impressions

The Trophy

The unique trophy consists of solid concrete and precious metal that symbolizes the interaction between the public-value orientation of the start-up and society. In 2016, three graduates of the renowned Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle / Saale – Matthias Zänsler, Oliver Reinecke and Michael Krenz- designed the trophy, and have handcrafted it ever since.

The foot of the narrow trophy is round – it stands for the big picture, the circle of society. Towards the top, it changes shape into the Pentagon and becomes the reflection of the pentagonal Public Value Scorecard. The inside of the trophy is hollowed out; here the change of form continues, and playfully refers to the correlation between the company and the five values of the scorecard. The top of the trophy has a round opening, which in turn gradually turns into a pentagon at the foot. The bottom forms a disc of metal (or in the case of the audience award: wood), in which the five public value dimensions: fulfillment, morality, quality of life, cohesion, and profitability are engraved, as a foundation of success for the winning start-ups.
